For many of us, our “Golden Years” afford us more time to get out and see the world. Jim and I enjoy traveling, bTraveloth for vacations and to visit our children scattered across the country. But let’s face it: Travel is expensive! To that end, I have researched the various aspects of traveling for those of us over “a certain age: and have come up with some nice discounts.

Air travel is pricey, but the airlines do offer a few perks for their “mature” passengers:

American Airlines.   For those 62+, there are various discounts, as much as 50% off for non-peak days.  Call the airline for details.

Continental Airlines.   Offers special fares for certain destinations and upgrades with no fee for members of their Continental President’s Club.

Southwest Airlines.   Call to learn about specific discounts for ages 65+.

United Airlines.   Call for various discounts for ages 65+.

U.S. Airways.   Call for various discounts for ages 65+.

Do you prefer traveling by train or bus? If so, there are bargains to be had:

Amtrak.   Those over 62 years can expect 15% off ticket prices.

Greyhound.   Greyhound also offers a 15% discount to those over 62.

When I fly, I usually need a rental car when I arrive at my destination. Car rental companies offer some nice deals for seniors:

Alamo Car Rental, Avis Car Rental and Hertz.   All of these companies off discounts up to 25% for AARP members.

National Rent-a-Car.   Up to 30% off for AARP members.

Budget Rent-a-Car.   40-50% off for AARP members.

Enterprise Rent-a-Car.   Offers discount for AARP members.

Do you have a favorite place to stay when you travel?  Some chain hotels and motels treat their senior guests well:

Holiday Inn.   If you are at least 62, discounts of 20-40% apply.

Best Western.   Guests only have to be 55 years old to qualify for 40% off.

Clarion, Comfort Inn, and Comfort Suites.   Get 20-30% off regular rates if you are 60+ at any of these lodgings.

Econo Lodge.   40% off for ages 60+.

Marriott Hotels.   25% off for 62+.

Quality Inn.   40-50% off for ages 60+.

Rodeway Inn.   20-30% off ages 60+.

Sleep Inn.   40% off for ages 60+.

Hampton Inns & Suites.   Book 72 hours in advance and get 40% off.

Hyatt Hotels.   25-50% off for 62+.

AMAC – a new organization similar to AARP also offers discounts on lodging, rental cars, etc.

The savings are out there, if you look for them and ask for them. Travel safely!
