Senior Communities: Yes Or No?

Many of today’s seniors aren’t ready to accept old age.  We are busy!  We travel; we garden; we swim; bike; take classes; volunteer.  And some of us even raise grandchildren.  We don’t have time to grow old.  But like it or not, the years will eventually catch up to us, and we’ll welcome the opportunity to live where someone else does all the work; a place where someone else takes care of the cooking, cleaning and even driving.  With that in mind, it might be a good idea to begin planning that future while the choices are ours.

There are distinct benefits to living in retirement communities if you enjoy group activities, golf at your doorstep, and low to zero maintenance living.  Retirement communities offer completely independent living for people 55 and older.  You benefit from a smaller home where someone else takes care of the lawn and home maintenance.  They usually have a dining room where you can purchase a meal plan if you choose.  Some homes are cottages or villas, and some are apartments.  When you reach a point where more care is needed, many of those communities offer assisted living with even smaller apartments and nursing care if needed.

Many senior communities offer bus transportation for residents to get to medical appointments, grocery and events.   Activities and trips are often planned for active residents.

It doesn’t hurt to think ahead and visit some senior communities to check out the facilities and amenities.  They come in all price ranges and are worth considering.  Check online in your area or the area where you plan to retire for senior living communities.  There is a good publication found in the magazine section of book stores devoted to senior living.  You’ll find tons of ads for various developments all over the United States.

Not everyone is comfortable with the idea of spending one’s older years surrounded by others of similar age.  Some seniors believe that living in a mixed area with all ages keeps them feeling younger.  Others just value their privacy and solitude and don’t wish to live close to anyone.

Whatever your choice, it pays to investigate your options before you need them and plan for your future before it arrives.  Find out the cost and how this will affect anything you might want to leave to your children.  It may pay to check with an attorney or financial expert as to how expenses should be handled.
