Dating Mrs. Robinson

On one of the dating sites a man decided he wanted the ‘Mrs. Robinson’ experience. You know – the movie with Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft where the college kid hits it off with a cougar lady?

Sadly I had to inform this fellow that he could no longer have the Mrs. Robinson experience since he’s way out of college at the age of 58, or at least I hope he is. And he would need to be exceedingly naïve. Again, with all those years hanging heavy on him, I’m betting he doesn’t have that qualification either.

And, just to be aggravating, I gave him the good news that at 58, he’s only a brief nap away from 68 – then he can play Mr. Robinson.

After leaving the site, I got to thinking about it and maybe he could have his experience after all, but in reverse. With all the sexting, and free birth control, and getting a whole lot more sex education in school (occasionally straight from the teacher without aid of textbooks), I believe there are some college kids who could teach him a thing or two.

Yes, folks, this is what the dating sites are for, or so some of the clients believe. It is to get all those great experiences that you didn’t get on your way to seniorhood. It is to find a woman older by several years who can give you the ‘Mrs. Robinson’ experience. It has nothing to do with finding a decent person with whom you might be tempted to spend the rest of your life. It is just a toy to get your jollies through.

Of course, then there are those of us who think maybe it should be a serious endeavor. While it’s definitely okay to laugh with each other, to enjoy new adventures together, I have a real problem with the overgrown kids headed for their golden years making it into a joke.

In this day and time, people do meet online. However, they have to be cautious doing so. With this man, I would find it very difficult to trust anything he did or said because with his opening line, he’s already said he thinks it’s all a joke.

If I sound miffed, be assured that I am. There are many who use every bit of courage they have to try this method of getting a date and they should not be considered a laughing stock. They should be given the respect you want for yourselves.

And, that, folks, is my sermon for the day.
